DRAMA / music
LOGLINE
A teenage boy struggles to surpass the legacy of his deceased brother by taking his rock band to new heights.
SYNOPSIS
GREY watches his brother’s band Head Gasket play at Rockethouse!, a major rock venue in front of a packed crowd.
Two years later, Grey is hangin out in his bedroom when he gets a text from his ex. He ignores it.
Shortly after his friends MICAH and BLANKET show up and convince him to stop moping around his house and come with them to try to pick up girls at the mall.
On their way to the mall, they discuss their upcoming gig at Zoe’s house party. As soon as they arrive at the mall, Blanket successfully gets a girl’s number while Grey talks to Micah about getting a new lead guitarist.
Inside the mall, Grey, Micah and Blanket go to their favorite record store where they meet up with MARS, the store’s manager, and LIZ, one of the store’s employees.
Shortly after, VERONICA, JUNE and KEIRA come into the store. Blanket invites them to hang out later that night. Grey notices Keira listening to music recommended by Mars.
That night Grey, Micah and Blanket meet up with Veronica, June and Keira at The Spot, a local burger joint. Everyone seems to be getting along when the waitress recognizes Grey as the brother of Mark, the lead singer of Head Gasket.
Grey seems bummed out about it after insinuating that his brother’s no longer around, but Blanket quickly changes the subject by inviting the waitress to see their band Sick Cat play tomorrow night.
Later that night, Grey, Micah and Blanket are out at The Hill with Veronica, June and Keira. They lay down a blanket on the grass to hang out on, but quickly realize they forgot to pick up weed and a couple other concessions.
Veronica, Blanket, June and Micah all go to pick up some stuff, leaving Grey alone with Keira. Keira and Grey hit it off.
Grey jokingly tries to read Keira. Keira then reads Grey with amazing accuracy. Grey is taken aback, and Keira apologizes for bringing up the subject of his dead brother. The two lay together looking up at the stars.
The next morning, one of Mark’s old bandmates from Head Gasket, TREVOR, shows up at Grey’s house. He and Grey do a quick jam sesssion.
Trevor then tells Grey that the band is getting back together, and that he’s going to need all his equipment back, the same equipment Sick Cat has been using. Trevor tells Grey he can pick it up another day, after their gig at Zoe’s.
That night, Grey, Micah and Blanket show up at Zoe’s party. They meet Zoe at the door, who lets them in without having to pay cover.
Meanwhile, a band, Cream Soda, is playing on stage at the party. The lead guitarist, STACY, gets into an altercation with the band’s vocalist, ZACH, prompting Sick Cat to go on early.
While setting up on stage, Micah tells the guys about a rumor that a scouting agent might be in the crowd. Just before they start to play, Grey spots the possible scouting agent in the crowd, as well as Keira kissing another guy.
Suddenly, Grey decides to open with a new song that the band has barely rehearsed. Sick Cat plays the new song, impressing everyone, including Keira and the potential scouting agent.
SETTING
Rockethouse! takes place in a fictionalized suburban area and city district with an intense indie music scene.
The entirety of the environments are designed around stylized 90s aesthetics, focused around indie rock, grunge, alt rock and burgeoning new styles which influence the locale.
CHARACTERS
GREY
Grey is a laid back, pensive teenager with a pension for music. He isn’t as lively as he once was, now somewhat sullen by the loss of his older brother, Mark.
Grey also feels as though Mark cast a long shadow on him because before his passing, his band was the best up-and-coming group in the indie scene.
MICAH
One half of the fraternal twin brothers, and one of Grey’s best friends. Micah is a clever and sarcastic bass player with a high intellect hidden behind his confident demeanor.
BLANKET
One half of the fraternal twin brothers, and one of Grey’s best friends. Blanket is a wild and outgoing drummer that exudes an overwhelming, and almost oblivious positivity.
KEIRA
Keira is sure of herself, and not just for a teenager, but by any metric. She’s playful and witty, but overall, just as aimless as most teens her age.
She’s new in town, her only connection being that she’s Veronica’s cousin, and falls comfortably into their friend group.
STACY
Stacy is rock god in the making. A mind-blowing guitarist with seemingly endless skill and charisma. Although overall, he’s quite introverted, he gets along decently with almost anyone he comes in contact with.
Stacy is out of school already, so he spends the majority of his time playing, and scrapping together money to have more time to play.
VERONICA
Mature for her age in how she thinks, immature for her age in how she acts. Veronica is popular in school, but overall uninvolved - totally focused on having the best experiences in life, and unfocused on anything dogmatic.
Veronica is friends with benefits with Blanket. She’s also Keira’s cousin, and new best friend.
